Play in a Day - Aim Higher
You Choose
In this workshop aimed at 20 - 30 Year 9 students Konflux will present a challenging, thought-provoking and aspirational day-long rehearsal and performance experience. Fun will also play a big part in the process.
The highly interactive nature of our Play in a Day approach means students are engaged from the very start. As they are taken step-by-step through the rehearsal process by their facilitator they will discover all sorts of hidden talents - allowing them to draw on and develop key skills whilst enjoying a fun and safe environment. It makes a traditionally 'dry' topic much more interesting and digestible. This physical and fast moving show will highlight concerns and perceived barriers many young people have towards learning and gaining qualifications. Looking at 'laddish' behaviour and then de-bunking it. From our being bombarded with unattainable media images and peer/fiscal pressure through to self-esteem and other motivational issues this process will lead to a performance promoting several key aspirational themes.
Given that all this happens in ONE DAY, care will be taken to avoid making any of the 'messages' tokenistic but the 'fun factor' is crucial to sustain - both for the performers and ultimately their peer audience in a 15-20 minute performance. Core values and themes will include independent decision making, sticking with qualifications and courses and of course thinking and planning for their careers ahead. Learning styles and the flexibility and parity of progression routes too will be simply defined and used as tools for stripping away many of the perceived barriers young people hold about life long learning.
A process such as this also provides an excellent opportunity to promote the existing support network to which young people may turn for further advice and guidance. It would be very easy, for example, to emphasise the role and presence of any Connexions staff based in a school or local office. Any useful website links could also be included. The audience will be encouraged to think pragmatically - when in doubt; ask!
Konflux can raise awareness of issues and motivate students to aim higher. This will also provide a lot of material for teachers and Advisors which can be developed and built on with students beyond the life of the performance itself; thus aiming even higher.
This Play in a Day scheme is unique and goes into the kind of detail and true interactivity that other companies cannot match. Konflux Theatre takes a much more hands-on and nurturing approach which provides an excellent experiential learning opportunity for those lucky enough to take part.
