Playinaday synopses - Shakespeare titles

The Tempest

Will's come up with another sure fire winner. Intrigue, Love, Magic and mayhem all ensue in a tale of magical thunderstorms, shipwrecks, ghosts, spells and lavish banquets. This one's got everything. Only one problem: he's stuck for a title. So, he's waiting for inspiration to hit. Meanwhile, at the Globe Theatre, rehearsals are in full swing for the Bard's latest live action/adventure...

When your brother suggests a nice day out in a boat you don't expect to be cast adrift in something that leaks like a sieve do you? At least Prospero didn't. So he and his daughter Miranda wash up on a tropical island only to find their sole companions are a mischievous 'sprite' called Ariel and a monster called Caliban. Prospero makes Caliban his slave (well, someone has to wash all the underpants!) and all seems well until one fateful day when the men responsible for their being cast away in the first place just happen to come sailing by... Time for a little revenge!

Now, if only we could think of a snappy title for the posters... Will he succeed? Perhaps with a little help from his friends in the audience..?

Macbeth

"Double, double, toil and trouble, Fire burn and cauldron bubble…"

A potted production of Shakespeare's tale of murder and the supernatural. Scotland is facing a rebellion which the King's greatest General, Macbeth, crushes. After the battle he meets three witches who predict his rise to the throne... but following their predictions leads to his own downfall. This ten minute reworking of the play is dramatic, fun and contains every key plot point.

Romeo and Juliet

"Two households, both alike in dignity…"

Arguably Shakespeare's most famous play, this tragic love story is brought to life in this Play in a Day script. It's the story of two star-crossed lovers from opposing, rival families and the inevitable consequences of their love. A lively fun and accessible retelling of a classic play which leaves the actors in the title roles feeling like the stars of the school.

A Midsummer Night's Dream

Shakespeare's tale of dreams on a Midsummer night depicts the adventures of four young lovers, a group of amateur actors in a moonlit forest and their interactions with the fairies who inhabit it. The play is considered to be a journey into fantasy and the surreal world. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular and the Play in a Day provides a great introduction to study of the play.
