Pupil Premium

What is Pupil Premium?

The pupil premium is an allocation of additional funding given to publicly funded schools in England for each child who has been identified as being disadvantaged. The funding is for use in any way the school deems to be effective in order to raise the attainment of eligible pupils and bridge the gap between them and their peers.

Many Schools use their pupil premium to fund or supplement arts and cultural experiences for eligible pupils.

The Arts and Pupil Premium

The Cultural Learning Alliance has released a report entitled ImagineNation, which brings together evidence in support of the Arts in Education:

1. Learning through arts and culture improves attainment in all subjects.

2. Participation in structured arts activities increases cognitive abilities.

3. Students from low-income families who take part in arts activities at school are three times more likely to get a degree.

4. The employability of students who study arts subjects is higher and they are more likely to stay in employment.

5. Students who engage in the arts at school are twice as likely to volunteer and are 20% more likely to vote as young adults.

Play in a Day

Konflux Theatre promotes a creative environment whereby every child has the chance to participate and learn. Our workshops are specifically designed to encourage pupils at all levels and give children the opportunity to create something they can be truly proud of.

Our most popular workshop choice for schools using their pupil premium provision is Play in a Day:

Play in a Day is a full days participatory workshop for a group of up to 30 KS1 or KS2 pupils. The pupils spend the day in your school hall with a professional workshop leader exploring the chosen subject through drama exercises in voice, movement and expression. They work towards putting together their own 10-15 minute performance which is presented back to peers and parents at the end of the day!

The subject choice is entirely up to you, to fit in with your curriculum or highlight important issues like Transition and Internet Safety. Play in a Day is used to highlight any curriculum topic including Literacy and Numeracy. Click the links to see full synopses for available titles.

The aims and benefits of Play in a Day:

-          Increase subject knowledge

-          Improve speaking and listening skills

-          Boost the confidence of the pupils taking part

-          Encourage team work

… all in one fun and exciting day!

For these reasons, many schools use our workshops annually as an integral cross-curricular learning resource.

'Cultural learning is not a passive process: it is an active engagement that invites children and young people to make their own stories… young people learn to co-operate with each other, to work towards a common goal, and celebrate collective achievement… They become active agents, learning imaginatively to shape the world around them.'
