Tips for Staying Safe Online
The internet can be a wondrous thing, allowing us to delve into anything and everything at any time!
It has so many positives, it can support learning and it can connect people from all around the world! But like with anything, it can come with its dangers and we wanted to put together a quick guide to help stay safe when online:
- Make passwords as strong as possible
- Log out of shared devices (at school or library)
- Enable Parental Control Modes where applicable
- Think before you share – once it’s online, it’s most likely there forever. It’s also useful to think about what has been shared and whether comments/responses can be made.
- Never share your personal/private information – Keep your address, phone number, bank details, passwords and date of birth private unless it is an authenticated request
- Be mindful of scams, fakes, misinformation and check who you may be speaking to! (Don’t ever speak with strangers and report to someone if you are being contacted).
- Do not click on links you do not recognise, it could be a virus.
- If you see something suspicious, always let an adult know and do not engage. There are also available platforms you can go to talk to someone including Childline if you need to speak with someone.
Safer Internet Day 2026 will take place on the 10th of February 2026, with celebrations and learning based around the theme ‘Smart tech, safe choices – Exploring the safe and responsible use of AI’.
